The application of most innovative developments in the field of nanotechnology, and particularly the use of RECAM®, enables to emphasize and fully develop the benefits of advanced oxidation and contaminants absorption processes, reaching levels of efficiency and economy much higher than traditional water purification approaches.
The treatment processes based on the use of RECAM® are a new, ground-breaking approach in the water purification technology scenario. The pocesses differ from traditional treatment technologies due to their high capacity rate for removing a wide range of contaminants, the reduced investment and running costs, the lack of sludge production and the simple configuration of plants, which can be sized according to the amount of water to be treated and the concentrations to be achieved at discharge.
The water and wastewater treatment processes developed with RECAM® are: filtration, electroxidation, nano Fenton, sonlysis and photocatalysis. All the processes are subject to international patents and are SA Envitech's property.
FILTRATION PROCESS
In the filtration pocess, RECAM® is the filtering material, while in other advanced oxidation processes, RECAM® acts as the reaction catalyst, allowing an increase in the reaction kinetics.
Filtration with RECAM® provides safe drinking water with no micro-organisms, pollutants and recalcitrant compounds. As RECAM®is a stable, inert material, no hazardous substances are released into the water and no by-products are produced.
Unlike other drinking water treatments, such as reverse osmosis, for example, which produces almost totally demineralised water, RECAM® does not alter the content of compounds that are precious for our metabolism, such as calcium or sodium: these elements, essential for human health, remain in the water and are assimilated by our bodies.
ADVANCED OXIDATION PROCESSES (AOP) WITH RECAM®
Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are those processes which are based on production and utilization of hydroxyl radicals. AOPs have considerable similarities due to the participation of hydroxyl radicals in most mechanisms that are operative during the reaction. Hydroxyl radicals are extremely unstable and reactive because of their high oxidation potential.
Since the reactions between hydroxyl radicals and organic species are extremely fast and nonspecific, these reactions are almost always controlled by the mass transfer of hydroxyl radical to the organic species or production of hydroxyl radicals. The kinetics is first order with respect to hydroxyl radical concentration and to the pollutant. Kinetic constants are in the range of 108÷1010 M-1 s-1, whereas radical concentration, even in steady state, in these processes is between 10-12 and 10-10 M. Therefore, the pseudo first order constant is in the range of 10-4÷0.1 s-1. Given that the hydroxyl radical is such an unstable and reactive species, it must be generated continuously ‘‘in situ” through chemical or photochemical or sonochemical reactions.
The use of RECAM® for AOPs give the possibility to use these processes in a cost-effective manner, without limitation in terms of organic contaminants removal.
All the processes are subject to international patents and are SA Envitech's property.
